How We Style It | Twist Out
I stopped perming my hair about 10 years ago and big chopped the summer before my freshman year of college. After many years of being natural, I've learned what works and what doesn't work with my hair. I've heat damaged it and had to chop it off. I went through a period where I was changing my hair color every summer. I've gone blonde, black, and red. But recently I've just been letting it be and focusing on health. My go to style these days is the twist out. It's easy and depending on when I take the twist down, I can usually make it last until my next wash day.
Step 1: Wash Hair
I typically wash my hair in the shower because it's most convenient. I start by wetting my hair and finger detangling under the running water. Next, I section my hair into 2-4 sections. I then wash my hair in these sections using DevaCurl No Poo or Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Sulfate-Free Shampoo. After rinsing, I apply DevaCurl One Condition or Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Conditioner. While the conditioner is working its magic, I detangle my hair again using a wide-tooth comb. Finally, I rinse out my conditioner and dry my hair using a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel.
Step 2: Prep Hair
I use the L.O.C. (leave-in, oil, cream) method to prep my hair for twist outs. As a leave-in, I use a mixture of DevaCurl One Condition, water, and peppermint oil that I mix into a small spray bottle and spritz into my sectioned hair. I then apply a small amount of coconut oil to each section of hair. Finally, I apply a small amount of Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie to each section.
Step 3: Twist It
I like to part my hair by hand for my twist and make about 5-8 twists per section. I usually do two strand twists but I've tried three strand twists as well and liked the results. It honestly depends on how much time I have to style my hair and how defined I want the curls to look. I like to twist my hair before to let it dry overnight and hope for the best in the morning. Below are the results of a successful twist out.
