Is Love Is Broke Boy Propaganda?
I, like many of you, just finished Season 1 of Mara Brock Akil's new OWN series Love Is and I'm invested but I have some STRONG opinions.
The show pulls you in with a love story based on Mara and Salim Akil. It's set in the 90's so we're feeling nostalgic and the music and fashion have me from the beginning. And then Yasir walks in with all his BDE and "sad boy" eyes. The brother looks good and he knows it. But he immediately does something trifling when instead of chatting a girl up for his friend who tells him her name and that he's interested in her, he waits for the friends to get up and go to the bathroom and approaches Nuri. The conversation doesn't really go anywhere, a year passes, and they bump into each other again. From this point, their whirlwind love story begins. And because I was dragged along, I have some things to say:
1. My a** would still be single because Nuri and Yasir are a hot mess and I don't need that kind of stress in my life. This relationship was moving at lightning speed. Nuri and Yasir move faster than my WIFI. They said "I Love You" on a first date. They both have a ton of baggage and loose ends that keep popping up. A lot of things go unchecked in this relationship and they try to patch the broken parts with sex. THAT AIN'T IT!!
2. Yasir is the O.L. (Original Lawrence). He's a nice guy with so much promise. He's educated and can string together a pretty sentence. He's attentive and affectionate. But, he has no business dating anyone right now. There are so many "red flags" and flashing hazards. He left his son and the child's mother back home to follow his dreams and move to LA with Ruby. He now has no job, no money, and an unreliable car. He's sleeping on his soon-to-be ex-girlfriends sofa while whispering sweet nothings and "I Love You's " over the phone with his new interest. He's spoiled and has established a pattern of using the women in his life until he's ready to move on. He's got way too much ego for a man who is essentially homeless. His life is in shambles.
3. Ruby didn't deserve any of this. Yasir uprooted her life and brought her to L.A. so they could pursue their dreams. His life became stagnant, they stopped working on the relationship, and he moved on. I will acknowledge that Ruby was fed up with Yasir before he moved on to Nuri. However, we must also acknowledge that Yasir got comfortable. Ruby is left to repair her broken life and move on the best way she can.
4. Nuri was a playette who put all her eggs in one basket to be with a man who wants to lead with no direction. She was making moves in her career and living out her dreams. She'd just bought a new home. Things are falling into place for Nuri and she had her rotation in check. She's blown her entire life up to make room for Yasir and allows so many issues to go unchecked. Nuri doesn't use her words. She doesn't speak up for herself.
If you've been watching, let me know what you think in the comments. I've fallen in love with the series and I cannot wait to see what will take place in season 2. Will Nuri and Yasir seek the therapy they so desperately need? Will things continue to improve for Ruby in the yoga world? Will we see more of her? Will we see growth for Yasir in his career? What are your predictions?
